Great Zipperless Carry-On Luggage: Testing the LEVEL8 Hegent

Great Zipperless Carry-On Luggage: Testing the LEVEL8 Hegent

Finding the best carry-on luggage means balancing packing capacity, weight, durability, and organization. I’m Amy French, Ph.D., the Roaming Historian, a history professor and travel blogger. My husband, Jon, and I travel about 14 weeks a year, often for extended trips, using only a carry-on and a personal item. That experience has taught me to prioritize usable packing space and practical design.

When LEVEL8 reached out, I was excited to try the LEVEL8 Hegent 20-inch Carry-On. Its zipperless, trunk-style design was new to me, replacing the traditional zipper with a rigid frame and dual locks.

I recently tested the Hegent on a short trip to Detroit. In this review, I’ll share what I liked, what aspect gave me pause, and whether this sturdy, feature-rich, stylish carry-on is worth considering for your travels.

What to Look for When Choosing a Carry-On Suitcase

Before getting into the details of the LEVEL8 Hegent, it helps to understand what matters to me when choosing a suitcase. Since I travel with only a carry-on and a personal item, my luggage needs to do more than look good. It needs to make efficient use of its interior space, keep my belongings organized, and withstand the realities of travel. Here are my priorities.

  • A good compression system. I find compression essential for packing efficiently. I frequently use compression packing cubes, but having a compression system built into the suitcase is another useful way to keep clothing in place and make the most of the available space.
  • A separate, fully zippered compartment. I like having one side of the suitcase enclosed by a full zippered divider, preferably with additional pockets. It keeps belongings contained when I open the case and gives me somewhere to organize smaller items.
  • Smooth spinner wheels. Anyone who has pulled a suitcase over uneven pavement or old cobblestones knows that wheels matter. I want luggage that rolls easily and is manageable when moving between airports, train stations, hotels, and city streets.
  • Built-in TSA-approved locks. I prefer luggage with an integrated locking system rather than having to keep track of a separate lock.
  • Good packing capacity. A suitcase can look spacious but have an interior that doesn’t work particularly well for actual packing. I pay attention to how much usable room there is and how the compartments are arranged.
  • A sturdy exterior. Even if I intend to carry my luggage onto the plane, circumstances can sometimes require gate-checking it. I want a suitcase that feels substantial enough to handle the occasional knocks and bumps of travel.

The Hegent checked enough of these boxes to make my shortlist. Its zipperless construction was an additional attraction, particularly because it offers an alternative to the traditional zip-around suitcase. I took the LEVEL8 Hegent carryon on a trip lately and here are my thoughts.

What I Like About the LEVEL8 Hegent Carry-On

1) The zipperless closure and substantial dual locks. The first thing I noticed about the Hegent was how sturdy it feels. The main compartment doesn’t rely on a traditional zipper. Instead, the suitcase closes with two substantial locking mechanisms and snap closures that secure the two sides together. This was a feature I really liked. Zippers can be vulnerable to tampering. A zipperless frame-style suitcase eliminates the need for a zipper around the main compartment, and the Hegent’s dual locks provide an additional layer of security.

I also like the practical advantage of the two snaps. Anyone who has struggled to pull a zipper around a suitcase that’s just a little too full will understand the appeal of a different closing mechanism. With the Hegent, I don’t have to wrestle with a zipper running around the entire case. I found it extremely easy to close, snap shut, and lock. To unlock you just push two buttons on the side of each lock and it pops open.

2) A divided interior with useful pockets and a compression strap.

I really liked the Hegent’s interior. One side has a Y-strap compression system that uses a compression pad with zippered pocket and a Velcro-secured strap and the opposite side has a full zippered divider with two pockets: one mesh and one waterproof. The Y-strap was easy to secure over my belongings without having to manipulate a small buckle thanks to the Velcro fastener. It works really well with packing cubes (by the way, LEVEL8 sent me their organization cubes and they’re really cool) and I felt that everything was quite secure. To test it, I pack my clothes on the compression side and then laid the compression pad on top. On top of that in a silky bag, I put my laptop and tablet. I figured if anything was going to move around it would in a silky drawstring bag. I closed the compression securely on top of everything and my electronics didn’t move around at all it seemed. When I opened the case, they were in the same place.

I appreciate the zippered side of the Hegent because I like having a suitcase that has a fully zippered interior side. The two pockets were quite functional. The mesh pocket is useful for smaller items you want to see easily. The waterproof pocket provides a separate place for items that need additional containment.

3) A sturdy exterior with substantial construction and good wheels.

The Hegent has a solid, substantial feel. Its hard shell, aluminum frame, and metal corner guards contribute to its solid-feeling construction. I appreciate this because luggage inevitably gets knocked about during travel. Even when you’re careful, suitcases encounter luggage carts, airport floors, overhead-bin spaces, and the occasional rough handling. There is a trade-off, however: that substantial construction comes with additional weight. I’ll discuss that in more detail below, because it’s an important consideration when choosing any carry-on. The spinner wheels glided over carpet and hard floors alike, which was a joy.

4) Handles that feel good to use.

Small design details can make a difference when you’re handling luggage throughout a long travel day. The rubberized carry handles feel comfortable in the hand, and I appreciate that they release slowly rather than snapping back abruptly.

The telescoping handle is another feature worth considering when choosing luggage. A handle that extends and retracts smoothly makes moving through airports and train stations more comfortable. The telescopic handle has four stages to accommodate various heights. I found them really secure and able to guide my bag easily.

5) A sleek gray finish with a blue accent.

I chose the gray Hegent with a blue ribbon accent, and I think the combination is incredibly sleek and chic. The gray is understated and sophisticated, while the blue adds a little personality. I like luggage that looks polished without being overly flashy, and this combination fits the bill. Of course, appearance is personal. But if you’re looking for a suitcase that feels modern and distinctive without a bright or heavily patterned exterior, this is a color combination I particularly enjoy. I think the matte gray finish will hold up well to scuffs and scrapes over the years, too.

Who Should Consider the LEVEL8 Hegent Carry-On?

The LEVEL8 Hegent may be a good option for travelers who want a sturdy, zipperless carry-on with integrated locks, a useful interior, and nice design. Its organization and substantial construction appealed to me during my packing test. However, it might not work for everyone. At 10 pounds empty, it may not suit travelers who prioritize lightweight luggage or fly on airlines with strict weight limits. If you prefer a traditional zippered suitcase or want to maximize the weight available for your belongings, compare lighter alternatives before buying. LEVEL8 has many different types of suitcases to choose from and given the high quality of the Hegent, I would presume they’re just as good…but with different features.

For me, the Hegent’s combination of organization, design, and easy-to-use closures makes it worth considering, particularly for shorter trips. Your priorities will determine whether the trade-off in weight makes sense.

Packing Capacity: How Much Fits in a 20-Inch Carry-On Luggage?

Packing capacity is one of the biggest considerations for me. When you’re traveling for weeks or months with a carry-on and a personal item, you need to think carefully about what goes where. For my trips, the suitcase needs to accommodate much more than clothing. I also need space for toiletries, electronics, accessories, and the small essentials that make an extended trip comfortable.

Here’s what I packed in the Hegent as I tested its capacity:

  • Clothing: The clothes I’ll need for my trip, including the layers and versatile pieces that help me pack efficiently. This was a short trip so I only needed a pair of jeans, pair of yoga pants, two tee shirts, one button down shirt, one sleeveless top, one shrug, one short-sleeved dressier top, and underwear/socks.
  • Toiletries: Skin care, makeup, hair care products, and personal hygiene essentials.
  • Hair straightener: An item that can be awkward to fit around other belongings, depending on its size and shape. I put it in between the frame for the telescopic handle.
  • Travel umbrella: A useful addition when you’re traveling between destinations and can’t rely on the weather. Also went in between the telescopic handle.
  • Electronics: My travel electronics (laptop/tablet) and their associated accessories.
  • Spare shoes: I packed a pair of flip-flops for the hotel and a pair of sneakers.
  • Jewelry: Small accessories that need to be kept together and protected.
  • Medications: Essential personal medications.
  • Other travel tidbits: The odds and ends that inevitably accompany a trip, from my noise machine for white noise at night to my journal and pens.

The Hegent‘s 38-liter manufacturer-listed capacity was enough for what I brought with a lot of room to spare. I could easily have packed a lot more clothes. Of course usable space varies by the person, and the shape of your belongings, the size of your items, and whether you use packing cubes will all affect how much you can fit.

My packing advice: Make a list of what you actually take on a typical trip before choosing a carry-on. If you travel with spare shoes, a full set of toiletries, electronics, and several clothing layers, those items should influence your decision more than an attractive product photograph.

The LEVEL8 Packing Organization Kit

LEVEL8 also provided me with a packing organization kit, which is very cool. One feature I particularly like is the interchangeable Velcro labeling system. I can change the labels depending on what I’m putting into each packing cube, whether it’s clothing, toiletries, electronics, or something else. That means I can identify what’s inside at a glance rather than opening multiple cubes to find a particular item. I liked being able to adjust the labels to suit the trip rather than having to work around fixed categories.

The organizers are slightly padded, which offers some additional cushioning for packed belongings. This could be a plus for some travelers, as they add structure and light protection, or a negative if you want to reduce bulk. LEVEL8 has compression packing cubes that might be better for travelers who want to maximize luggage space.

Is the LEVEL8 Hegent Carry-On Worth It?

I think the LEVEL8 Hegent  is worth considering if you’re looking for a sturdy carry-on with zipperless, dual TSA-approved locks, a well-designed interior, smooth wheels, a luxurious look, higher-end design details (especially the handles), and a decent price. Ultimately, the best carry-on is one that works for the way you travel. Think about what you pack, how often you move between destinations, whether your airline imposes weight restrictions, and which features will genuinely make your trips easier. For me, the Hegent has several qualities that make it an appealing alternative to a traditional zippered carry-on. But if traditional zippered bags are what you desire, LEVEL8 has those, too.

Frequently Asked Questions About Carry-On Luggage

What are the pros and cons of the LEVEL8 Hegent Carry-On?

The main pros of the LEVEL8 Hegent are its secure zipperless closure, built-in TSA locks, Y-strap compression system, and smooth 360-degree spinner wheels. The primary con is its heavier 10-pound empty weight, which takes up more of your airline’s baggage weight allowance. It is ideal for travelers prioritizing durability and organization, but less suited for those needing ultra-lightweight gear. If weight is your deciding factor, then you might want to consider one of LEVEL8’s lighter bags.

What is a zipperless suitcase?

A zipperless suitcase is a hard-shell bag that uses a rigid frame, metal latches, and snap closures instead of a traditional cloth zipper around the main compartment. The LEVEL8 Hegent, for example, uses a rigid frame, dual locks, and snap closures. This design provides an alternative to traditional zippered luggage, although the suitability of either design depends on your packing needs and preferences.

Is a zipperless carry-on better than a traditional suitcase?

Neither is objectively better; the right choice depends entirely on your travel priorities. Zipperless frame suitcases offer superior security, structural protection, and ease of closing, but they are typically heavier. Traditional zippered bags are lighter and sometimes offer expandable sections, but their cloth zippers can be vulnerable to breaking or tampering. Both zipperless and traditional designs have advantages, so choose the suitcase that best fits your packing style, budget, and travel needs.

Will the LEVEL8 Hegent fit in an airplane’s overhead bin?

The Hegent is marketed as a carry-on, but acceptance depends on the airline’s size and weight restrictions. The manufacturer’s listed dimensions are 15 × 9 × 22 inches, including wheels and handles. Check the requirements of the airline you’re flying, particularly if you’re traveling internationally or on a smaller aircraft.

Is a 20-inch carry-on big enough for an extended trip?

Yes, a 20-inch carry-on is absolutely big enough for extended travel if you pack efficiently. I use a 20-inch carry-on and a personal bag to travel for 2 ½ months at a time every year, so I definitely think so. It’s how much you carry that dictates size. Here is my packing guide if you would like to see how I travel for long periods of time over various climates with different events and activities to attend. If you think a carry-on is too small for you, then consider one of LEVEL8’s larger suitcases from its various lines.
