I read a lot of news and social media posts every day, many of them travel-related. While some of the situations described are similar, people’s expectations and, especially, their reactions sometimes leave me speechless. And every once in a while, just when I think I’ve come across the most unbelievable part of a story, another detail catches me completely off guard. That’s exactly what happened with the story I’m sharing today. So many unexpected details made it feel like peeling an onion – every layer revealed something else!
I’ve covered several airplane seat disputes, including a Delta passenger who refused to give up her selected seat, a traveler who found someone else occupying the window seat he’d paid for, and a couple whose seat-booking strategy sparked another debate about airplane etiquette.
Other disagreements have involved things you’d never expect to go viral. One man asked a fellow passenger to chew with his mouth closed, but he faced considerable criticism himself after posting the encounter online. Another woman filmed a passenger who put both his suitcase and backpack in the overhead bin on a full flight, sparking an argument about airline rules and filming strangers. And a Delta passenger reported being hit in the face four times by another traveler’s backpack while he was stowing his luggage.
But the story I’m sharing today has a different twist – well… actually, there are two. You’ll see.

She Was Flying Home When Another Passenger Asked Her Something
Conference Director and Gen X influencer Tomiko Harvey was on her way home after the death of her father. She had a connecting flight from Istanbul to Washington, D.C., with more than ten hours in the air ahead of her.
In an Instagram video made up of photographs and text overlays, Tomiko described what happened after a woman approached her with a request. The passenger wanted to sit beside her husband, but their assigned seats weren’t together.
Tomiko had an aisle seat, which she wanted to keep. The other woman was asking her to give it up so the couple could spend the flight together.
She refused.
She explained her decision in the caption:
“I refused to give up my aisle seat because a lady missed her husband. 😳”
Anyone who has spent ten hours on a plane knows how much difference a seat can make, especially when you’re already exhausted.
What happened after the refusal turned it into a story that generated thousands of reactions.
Tomiko Says the Woman Did The Same Thing for Three Hours
According to Tomiko, the woman began crying after she refused to switch seats, and the crying continued for approximately three hours.
Eventually, Tomiko asked whether someone had died, trying to understand why the woman was so upset, especially as Tomiko was returning from a trip to Kazakhstan following the death of her father. The answer surprised her, given her own journey.
“I finally asked her if someone died, because who cries for 3 hours? She said nobody died. She just missed her husband and whose shoulder would she lay her head on.”
The seating arrangement explains why Tomiko considered the request such a bad deal. The husband was sitting two rows ahead, in a middle seat. To sit together, she was asked to trade her aisle seat for a middle seat, where she would stay for the entire long-haul flight.
She wasn’t willing to do that.
“I chose my seat. I stayed in it.”
And Where Was the Husband During All This?
One of the most discussed details came from Tomiko’s description of the husband himself.
While his wife reportedly cried because she couldn’t sit beside him, Tomiko said he stayed two rows ahead, wearing his headphones and sleeping.
As she put it:
“Her husband was two rows up in a middle seat with his headphones on, sleeping in heavenly peace the entire flight.”
That description gave Instagram commenters plenty to discuss, with some joking that the husband was enjoying an unexpectedly peaceful journey.
Tomiko also shared what she said to the woman after they landed:
“Good job. Look at you surviving without your husband for 10 hours.”
And she ended her account with a joke about her own marriage:
“Now I need to reevaluate my marriage because I clearly do not love my husband enough. 😂”
The video includes photos taken aboard the aircraft, with the other passenger’s face blurred. Tomiko’s account describes the prolonged crying and the women’s exchanges.
The Husband’s Peaceful Flight Became a Running Joke
When I checked the Instagram discussion, the post had 14,900 comments. Some of the most popular reactions focused almost entirely on the husband.
One comment, which had received more than 45,000 likes, read:
“He made sure he had a peaceful fight, by himself.”
Others were equally amused by the contrast between Tomiko’s description of the wife crying and the husband apparently sleeping through the journey.
“Husband ain’t look back once huh 😂”
“He did not miss her he had a great flight!😅 and you did the right thing. Some women are so needy….”
“He chose peace. Said let somebody else be drained for 10 hours”
Some viewers went further, joking that the seating arrangement might not have been accidental.
“Plot twist.. hubby booked the flights and seat selection. That mane needed a break! 🤣🤭”
“I’m willing to bet you a wooden nickel that her husband booked those seats without her knowing it so that he could have a peaceful flight. 😂”
Of course, these are viewer jokes and theories, not verified information about how the couple booked their tickets. Another commenter raised a more practical question:
“Why was her husband not up there negotiating with his seat mates? 🫠”
Most Commenters Refused to Give Up an Aisle Seat for a Middle Seat
Many supported Tomiko’s decision, especially since she would have traded an aisle seat for a middle seat on a flight lasting more than ten hours.
“Can’t survive a 10 hour flight without her husband but also won’t pay to seat together. None of those sound like your problem.”
“They should have booked their damn seats together. I’m with you 100%. Ain’t no way in hell I’m doing a middle seat if I don’t have to!”
“I absolutely would not have switched! Omg! People need to stop guilting those who actually choose and/or pay for their seats.”
“I don’t care how long the flight is, I’m not switching to a middle seat for someone else’s comfort.”
Other reactions focused on the length of the flight and the crying:
“Crying for three hours is insane”
“Yea, nahhh not on a 10hr flight. Lady please! 😂”
“Wait. She wanted you to switch your situation for a TEN HOUR international flight in the middle seat? 🤔 Absolutely not. Cry harder. 🤷🏽♂️”
Several commenters believed the couple should have arranged to sit together in advance, although Tomiko’s account doesn’t establish how their seats were assigned or whether they had paid for seat selection.
One viewer wrote:
“I’m so happy you didn’t give it up. They both had middle seats which means they paid the lowest fare. And if they really wanted to sit together they would have booked as such, but they wanted to save money. Then to cry like a toddle thinking she could get her way…🙄”
Some People Thought Tomiko Should Have Shown More Compassion
Not everyone supported Tomiko’s response. Some commenters wondered whether the passenger might have been experiencing severe anxiety or another problem that wasn’t apparent from the video.
“Seems like she was having an mental health related episode. I get not giving up the seat but sometimes my anxiety gets high at times and a comfort person is ideal. Those who get it, get it.”
Another person described their own experience with a spouse who struggles with flying:
“Personally, I know my wife is petrified of flying. It’s not mandatory but a courtesy… you didn’t have to move. To make her feel comfortable I would have switched. A good gesture. But you got what you wanted. 👏”
One commenter questioned the way Tomiko responded to the request:
“Why be so mean if asked nicely. I’ve offered before if they are nice and split a part. And yes, I lived in Europe for 12 years…lots of travel.”
Another viewer was less sympathetic to the idea that the couple couldn’t remain separated for the duration of the flight:
“If you can’t be on the same plane just a few rows away from your partner for the length of a single flight, your marriage has greater issues.”
The comments show how differently people interpreted the same situation. Some considered the request a reasonable favor, even though accepting it would have meant giving up a more desirable seat. Others believed Tomiko had no reason to sacrifice her comfort.
Other Viewers Questioned the Filming and Tomiko’s Language
Some people also agreed she could refuse the seat swap but took issue with how she presented the incident on Instagram.
One person objected to Tomiko describing the situation as “white tears”:
“Do you have to make it about race ? White tears not necessary.”
Another questioned the decision to photograph or record a stranger who had asked for a favor and was visibly upset.
“We don’t have the full context, but i think taking pictures of and recording someone who didn’t appear to do anything negative to you but ask a favor, is weird behavior. We need to stop recording people in public unless there’s an actual need for evidence of something serious happening. Like, okay she cried. Why tf does it matter? You don’t know her situation, just ignore her.”
Tomiko blurred the other passenger’s face in the video, but that didn’t settle the discussion over whether sharing the encounter online was appropriate.
One Question Confused Viewers: Who Was Supposed to Switch Seats?
The seating arrangement sparked its own discussion, with some viewers unsure how Tomiko changing seats would have let the couple sit together.
One person asked:
“Maybe I’m missing something but how could your changing seats with her help her to sit next to her husband 2 rows up? Why didn’t she ask the person(s) sitting next to her husband?”
Another commenter explained: Tomiko would move into the husband’s middle seat, letting him take her aisle seat beside his wife.
“Are you serious? You people’s reading comprehension is near zero and it’s embarrassing. Nowhere did she say she wanted to switch seats with this woman. She said the woman wanted her to give up her aisle seat for a middle seat, which would be her switching seats with the husband 2 rows up so he can come back and sit in the aisle seat next to his wife. How are you genuinely not getting this?”
The proposed switch would have kept the couple together, with Tomiko in the husband’s middle seat.
Other Travelers Shared Very Different Seat-Switching Experiences
Some commenters explained that they had happily changed seats for couples in the past, depending on the circumstances.
“I booked a flight for our honeymoon in first class. They didn’t have seats next to each other. People swapped seats for us. It wasn’t that deep.”
Another person felt the type of seat being offered was the deciding factor:
“Swapping an aisle for an aisle is one thing…even an aisle for a window is not cool but also not nearly as insane as expecting someone to give up their aisle for a middle. Nope.”
I’ve covered several cases where the proposed exchange was similarly unequal. In one, a man arrived to find someone else sitting in the window seat he’d paid for, and the couple involved wanted him to accept a middle seat. In another, a Delta passenger refused to surrender her selected window seat to a family traveling with a child.
More cooperative exchanges have happened, too. One Delta passenger received an unexpected Comfort+ seat from a stranger, while a newlywed couple’s window-and-aisle booking strategy sparked a separate debate about couples who try to secure an empty middle seat.
Even checking your seat assignment as part of your pre-flight preparations can’t guarantee that nobody will ask you to exchange seats once you’re on board. On a long-haul journey, where travelers have already planned their in-flight comfort around the seat they’ve chosen, that request can be a big deal.
Watch the Instagram Video
You can find the original account, photos, and on-screen text on Tomiko Harvey’s Instagram profile, where she shared the experience and asked followers whether they’d agree to switch; this is the post.
She ended her caption with a question:
“Is it rude to refuse to switch seats on a plane? If you want to sit together, book together or pay for seat selection.”
So, would you give up your aisle seat for a middle seat on a ten-hour flight so another passenger could sit next to their spouse? Would your decision change if the person became visibly upset after you refused?
