I love window seats, and I prefer to choose my seat in advance whenever I fly. I know people who care much more about sitting next to their partner, even if that means giving up the seat they’d normally choose. And I know couples who wouldn’t think twice about sitting separately, even on a long flight.
A husband celebrating his 25th wedding anniversary recently shared a video from a United Airlines flight. What happened took only a few seconds, but it was enough to get thousands of people talking – and some responses were far more revealing than the video itself.
Relationships ended in the air – yes, really – and I am sharing the examples below, and a honeymoon dispute left thousands arguing over who behaved worse.
What surprised me most was that people couldn’t even agree on which partner did something wrong – or whether anyone did anything wrong at all.

He Gave Up His Window Seat So His Wife Could Sit Beside Him
On October 22, 2026, a Reddit user shared a short video explaining that he and his wife were traveling to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary.
He had wanted a window seat. His wife, however, wanted them to sit right next to each other, and sitting across the aisle apparently wasn’t good enough. So he gave up his preferred seat and arranged adjoining seats in United’s premium cabin.
That should have settled the seating issue. But once they were on board, he discovered something interesting about the seats.
A movable privacy divider sat between them and he couldn’t resist trying it.
He raised the divider between himself and his wife, creating a barrier between the two people who had specifically arranged to sit together. His wife responded with an eye roll and a head shake, prompting amused reactions from viewers.
The husband jokingly suggested that his little experiment might have consequences for their marriage. He even joked that there might not be a 26th anniversary.
His Reddit title added to the joke, suggesting that if he didn’t make it from United flight UA7 to UA6, people would know why. Fortunately, he later clarified that his wife was more tolerant of his humor than her expression suggested.
But not everybody appreciated the joke.
Some Travelers Loved the Joke. Others Wondered Why He Shared It
The Reddit discussion quickly attracted thousands of upvotes and comments from travelers with very different reactions.
Many couples immediately recognized the husband’s sense of humor. One woman explained that her husband had done the same thing to her, and after laughing, they lowered the divider and synced their screens to watch the same movie.
She ended her comment with a simple observation:
“You have to have fun!”
Another traveler shared a similar experience with her boyfriend:
“The boyfriend and I do this the second we get situated. Start making faces and putting up the divider like angry drivers in a traffic jam.”
Some married travelers said they could easily imagine doing the same thing.
“Married almost 30. I’d put up the divider too and I adore my husband 😂”
Another commenter, married for 36 years, said they could relate to the video. Someone else suggested that the couple would probably spend the flight repeatedly raising and lowering the divider.
But not everyone appreciated the post.
One commenter questioned whether joking about avoiding interaction with a spouse was worth announcing publicly.
Another asked:
“You didn’t have a group chat you could share this with?”
The remark attracted more than 560 upvotes, though other Reddit users quickly started mocking the criticism. One replied:
“We are that group chat”
Another traveler explained that he’d done the same thing on his honeymoon a few weeks earlier, but had shared the video privately with friends.
That prompted a sarcastic response:
“check it out everyone! this guy is in a group chat!”
The husband wasn’t impressed by the negative reactions either. In one response, he sarcastically remarked that he’d apparently forgotten people weren’t allowed to have fun in such a serious subreddit.
When someone wished the couple a happy anniversary, he reassured readers:
“She’s more tolerant than this makes it look, for sure”
And the discussion didn’t end with the privacy divider. Some travelers shared stories about what happened when couples disagreed over airplane seats, including one man who claimed a similar situation ended his relationship.
One Traveler Said a Similar Seating Issue Ended His Relationship
Among the responses was a story from a traveler who said he’d booked Delta One seats for himself and his girlfriend on a cross-country overnight flight.
He had paid extra for the upgraded seats, thinking they would both appreciate the opportunity to sleep comfortably.
But his girlfriend was upset when she saw the seating arrangement. According to his account, she interpreted the separate premium seats as an attempt to avoid sitting next to her.
He explained:
“She got mad that I was ‘trying to not sit next to her’. We actually ended up breaking up on that trip lol”
He also mentioned an upcoming trip with a new girlfriend, who initially told him that she didn’t care where they sat as long as they were together.
He admitted that her response briefly reminded him of his previous relationship. Fortunately, he said his new girlfriend was happy to hear about the upgrade.
Other couples took a much more relaxed approach.
One traveler married for 12 years explained that she and her spouse prefer separate window seats in premium cabins. They sometimes text each other during the flight, but both enjoy eating, sleeping, and relaxing independently.
As the commenter explained:
“We’ll spend quality time together again once we’re there.”
Another traveler, married for more than 20 years, said their partner sometimes chooses a different row, regardless of which cabin they’re flying in.
One person responded approvingly, saying that a little personal space can be healthy for couples:
“Whatever makes the couple happy.”
But not everyone sees sitting separately as a problem to be solved. For some couples, it’s simply their preferred way to fly. For others, the same decision can raise questions about how much their partner values spending time together.
And a recent TikTok controversy showed just how heated those questions can get.
A Woman Said Her Boyfriend’s Business-Class Upgrade Was the Beginning of the End
In a TikTok video that attracted widespread attention, content creator Madeleine McAdam shared an experience with her former boyfriend.
They flew to visit his family. Her boyfriend traveled frequently for work and had airline status, while she rarely traveled. When a business-class upgrade became available, he accepted it. Madeleine stayed in economy.
She expected him to offer her the better seat, especially since they were traveling to visit his family and he was already used to upgrades. According to her account, he settled into business class, enjoyed a drink, chatted with his seatmate, and even turned around to wave at her.
She said the experience was the beginning of the end of their relationship. She argued that it was about consideration and whether a man should automatically want his partner to have the more comfortable seat.
But the comments revealed just how differently people viewed his decision.
Some People Thought He Should Have Given Her the Upgrade
Several TikTok users said they would expect their partner to offer them the better seat, even if he’d earned the upgrade through his own airline status.
One woman explained her expectations of marriage:
“I put everyone first. My husband is the one person who looks out for me and will always put me first”
Another commenter said she couldn’t imagine accepting an upgrade without offering it to her partner:
“That’s wild I’m not married yet, but if I got upgraded I would give the ticket to my partner”
A father of three daughters was equally enthusiastic:
“Agreed 1000000000000%. From a Dad of 3 girls!”
Two people identifying themselves as flight attendants added their experiences.
One wrote:
“As a flight attendant I ALWAYS see them switch it’s almost like a standard at this point.”
Another took a much stronger position:
“I’m a flight attendant and if a man ever says his wife is in the back, I always call him out. I am no man’s peace , even at work .”
Other viewers shared experiences with their own partners.
One woman recalled how her boyfriend had spent nine hours in the middle seat because she preferred the window and didn’t want to sit next to a stranger:
“REAL!!! My bf sat like this in the middle seat for a 9 hour flight, even though I’m smaller and should probably take the middle, all bc I wanted the window and prefer not to sit next to a stranger. Not as crazy as this first class story but still!!! A real man wants YOU comfortable.”
Another traveler described witnessing a couple handle an upgrade very differently:
“I just sat next to a couple, the man got upgraded. He sent his wife up to first class immediately. He didn’t even consider going. They were so cute. Then she called him from up front to make sure he was OK.”
For these commenters, offering a partner the better seat was a gesture of care, and some thought a loving partner should do it without being asked.
But another group of viewers strongly disagreed.
Others Wanted to Know Why the Sacrifice Had to Be One-Sided
Not everybody accepted the idea that a man should automatically give up an upgrade he’d earned through frequent travel.
One commenter criticized what they saw as an unfair expectation:
“Every piece of relationship advice will include the man sacrificing everything to make the woman’s life better with absolutely no reciprocity whatsoever”
Another challenged Madeleine’s reasoning:
“The principle is he earned the points, it’s his seat. What’s the principle in your mind?”
Someone else wanted to know whether the expectation would work both ways:
“And if you got upgraded instead should you have switched with him and gave it to him?”
One viewer summed up the criticism sarcastically:
“✍️: avoid experiencing joy, sacrifice everything. got it.”
But some people also didn’t believe either partner should automatically take the better seat.
One suggested a completely different solution:
“Personally I’d rather just reject the upgrade altogether so we could sit together. Does that not make the most sense???”
Another agreed with the idea that traveling together should come first, while also questioning whether the boyfriend had any obligation to surrender the upgrade:
“he shouldn’t have to just give you his seat but he shouldn’t have left you sitting alone. its both of us or neither of us to get an upgrade for me.”
Someone else argued that communication might have made a difference:
“I’m curious if he would have switched with you if you had voiced that desire. Thoughtfulness and caring for others can be learned when it’s not innate. This is a beige flag for sure, but men are allowed to desire comfort too.”
And while people disagreed about who deserved the business-class seat, some thought the boyfriend had made the situation worse with one small gesture.
As one viewer put it:
“The turning around to wave at me would have pmo so much”
It was an interesting divide. Some people believed he should have offered her the upgrade, others defended his right to keep it, and a third group thought both partners should have remained in economy.
One Father’s Approach to Upgrades Was Completely Different
One response came from a father who described how he handles upgrades when flying with his wife and children.
He wasn’t looking for a better seat for himself.
“Every flight we go I I check to see if there are any cheap upgrades to business class for just my wife. I’ll sit in economy with the kids. She’s spent enough time with them, and deserves a couple hours of peace and quiet.”
His comment introduced another perspective: sometimes an upgrade is an opportunity to give one partner a break while the other takes care of the children.
And it raises an interesting question. Is offering the better seat a sign of consideration, or is letting your partner enjoy an upgrade they’ve earned just as thoughtful?
Another Reddit dispute took this disagreement even further, because this time the couple was traveling on their honeymoon.
A Husband Accepted a Business-Class Upgrade on His Honeymoon. His Wife Refused to Comfort Him

ID 243433054 ©Yuri Arcurs | Dreamstime.com
In another Reddit discussion, a woman described what happened when she and her new husband were flying to Mexico for their honeymoon.
She traveled frequently for work and had accumulated enough points to request a business-class upgrade, but she made one condition clear when booking: she wanted the upgrade only if two seats became available.
At boarding, however, an airline employee told them that only her husband had been upgraded. The wife declined it, explaining that they were on their honeymoon and wanted to stay together.
Her husband intervened and took the upgraded seat for himself, saying she had experienced business class before, while he had never had the chance.
She described her reaction:
“To say I am pissed off is an understatement.”
She was upset, but they boarded separately. What happened next drew even more criticism.
According to her account, her husband was nervous about flying and normally relied on her reassurance during flights. Once he was settled in business class, he began sending messages saying that he felt anxious and needed her support.
She ignored the messages. Later, he returned to economy, offered her half his breakfast, and asked why she wasn’t responding.
She told him he should have considered the consequences of sitting apart before accepting the upgrade.
Reddit Users Were Divided Over Who Was Being Unfair
Many commenters sided with the wife, questioning why her husband had accepted an upgrade using her points and then expected her to help him cope with his fear of flying from another cabin.
One commenter pointed out the contradiction:
“He wanted to fly business class but then was upset his wife couldn’t comfort him from economy. He can’t have it both ways.”
Another traveler explained that they would normally have no problem with married couples sitting separately, but the circumstances changed their opinion:
“I’m usually pretty team ‘married couples can sit apart for a few hours on a plane’ but this is their honeymoon……….”
Others were less sympathetic to either of the newlyweds.
One commenter thought both partners were making too much of a three-hour flight:
“ESH. You’re both really over dramatic.”
The commenter argued that they had an entire honeymoon ahead of them and should have been able to spend a few hours apart without becoming so upset.
Another person also questioned whether the argument deserved the reaction it was receiving:
“lol i came in here expecting everyone to be like ‘esh who fucking cares its a three hour flight?’ but theyre calling for her to annul her marriage…………….”
Other travelers suggested that accepting the upgrade itself wasn’t necessarily the problem. One commenter proposed sharing the experience by switching seats partway through the flight, so both partners could enjoy business class.
Still, the disagreement over the upgrade was only part of the problem. For the wife, the situation involved an agreement made before the flight, her own accumulated miles, and her husband’s expectation that she would continue comforting him despite his decision to sit elsewhere.
A Girlfriend Wanted to Spend $1,400 on Her Own Birthday Upgrade
Another Reddit discussion approached the question from a different direction.
A man described a disagreement with his girlfriend over her plan to purchase a business-class upgrade for an approximately 8.5-hour flight. She wanted to treat herself for her 30th birthday and was prepared to spend around $1,400 on the better seat.
He couldn’t afford the same upgrade and was unhappy that she would spend the flight in business class while he remained in economy.
Unlike the previous stories, there was no free upgrade or unused airline status involved. She wanted to pay for the experience herself.
The original Reddit post has since been deleted, but the surviving comments show how differently people viewed the disagreement.
Some felt it was selfish to book an expensive seat for herself while leaving her boyfriend behind on a trip they were taking together.
One commenter wrote:
“I can’t imagine ever doing something like this to my husband.”
Another thought the decision disrespected her partner, especially since they were traveling together for a special occasion.
But others defended her right to enjoy a milestone birthday experience, especially since commenters said she was already helping pay for her boyfriend’s trip.
One person argued:
“30’s a big deal to a lot of people”
Another noted that if the couple kept their finances separate, she should be free to spend her own money on something she wanted. After all, the flight represented only a small part of their trip.
However, the discussion became more heated over another disagreement involving Global Entry, the expedited U.S. customs clearance program.
According to details preserved in the comments, the boyfriend had Global Entry but usually stayed in the regular line with his girlfriend because she didn’t have it. When he suggested using his benefit and allowing her to wait alone, she reportedly objected, saying the situations weren’t comparable.
One commenter pointed out what they considered a double standard:
“She’s the asshole. Sounds kinda selfish.”
Others felt the two situations differed because waiting in separate customs lines usually involves far less time apart than spending an entire long-haul flight in separate cabins.
One person supported the girlfriend’s upgrade but still questioned her reaction to Global Entry:
“As long as you’re not splitting the $1400 upcharge- she should be able to upgrade herself if she wants. 8.5 hours on a plane is rough and if she wants to treat herself on her birthday and upgrade I would say let her without making it a huge deal.”
That same commenter added that the girlfriend was being hypocritical about Global Entry and that the boyfriend should be free to use it.
For some Reddit users, the argument was about spending money on personal comfort. For others, it was about whether both partners were being held to the same expectations when traveling together.
Some Married Couples Say They Actually Prefer Flying Separately
In the original United Airlines anniversary discussion, several longtime married travelers questioned why sitting together mattered in the first place.
Some said they routinely choose separate window seats, particularly when flying in premium cabins where they can sleep, eat and watch movies independently.
Others liked sitting across the aisle from their spouse because each person could have an aisle seat.
And some couples simply preferred staying together, even if it meant accepting a less desirable seat.
No universal rule dictates which arrangement a couple should choose. Friction often comes from discovering during the flight that both people had very different expectations.
Conclusion: One Airplane Seat, Very Different Expectations
After 25 years of marriage, the United Airlines husband apparently knew his wife well enough to risk a little joke with the privacy divider. His later response suggested they could easily enjoy that kind of humor together.
But other stories show how easily airline seating decisions can turn into relationship disagreements, especially when one person reads a better seat as a sign of whether their partner puts them first.
Some travelers believe couples should always sit together. Others consider offering the better seat an important gesture. And plenty see nothing wrong with enjoying a comfortable seat on your own for a few hours.
I’m curious where you stand. If you and your partner were offered just one business-class upgrade, would you take it, give it away, or turn it down so you could sit together?
